The Process I Use

I’ve made pepper mills in a variety of sizes from 6″ to 18″ tall. All the grinding mechanisms I use are stainless steel and can be adjusted for fine to coarse ground pepper. I offer a lifetime warranty on all my handcrafted items.
Each mill is numbered sequentially when it is created and has my signature hand carved on the bottom. You will be issued a Certificate of Authenticity that will be shipped with your purchase.
The process I use to select and assemble the woods together, along with cutting them by hand, ensures that each mill will be uniquely spectacular and impossible to duplicate. You can be assured that your pepper mill will be truly one-of-a-kind and although you may see others with the same woods even if it’s cut in the same design, you will never see another one exactly like yours.

Wood Species I Commonly Use

The woods I use are hand picked by my wife, Darlene S. Hamblin, and I. They are placed together using different thicknesses and varying wood species; sometimes the variety of woods are placed together to complement each other, other times for contrast. I use a carefully selected combination of the following woods in varying thicknesses:
Exotic Wood Species
  • RedHeart
  • PurpleHeart
  • Red Gum
  • Brazilian
  • Cherry
  • Zebra
  • Wenge
  • Padauk
  • Tulipwood
Common Wood Species
  • Oak
  • Maple
  • Walnut
  • Cherry
  • Holly
  • Mahogany

The process of preparing and turning the mills takes approximately 3-4 days then I apply a polyurethane finish which is brushed on to ensure a good coat of finish. Although a spray finish from an aerosol can dries quicker, I don’t feel the coats of finish are as thick as brushing it and having thicker coats of finish helps protect the woods. Some of the woods take as long as a week to dry before the next coat can be applied but I still apply seven coats of finish giving each one a high gloss finish that will protect it for many years to come.
